Looking after your teeth and gums in pregnancy
Your comfort during pregnancy starts with a healthy mouth.
Top dental care tips for pregnancy:
- Brush twice daily
Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth morning and night. - Eat a balanced diet
Include foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, and C to support healthy teeth and gums. Limit sugary snacks and acidic foods. - Rinse after vomiting
Morning sickness can expose teeth to stomach acid. Rinse with a mix of water and baking soda (1 tsp in 1 cup water) to neutralize acid before brushing. - Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water to help wash away food particles and bacteria, especially if you are experiencing dry mouth. - Avoid skipping dental visits
Routine dental check ups and cleanings are safe and important during pregnancy. Let your dentist know you are pregnant. - Manage gum sensitivity
Hormonal changes can cause swollen or bleeding gums (pregnancy gingivitis). Gentle brushing and flossing can help reduce inflammation. - Limit sugary and acidic foods
Too many sweets and sour snacks can wear down your enamel and lead to cavities. Try swapping them out for tooth-friendly options like cheese, yogurt, or crunchy veggies like carrots and celery.
