Registering a death in Dudley
- Funeral director will need to be chosen before the registration.
- Book an appointment with the registry office when the doctor has sent the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death to the registrar.
To book you can either do this:
- Online
- Email the office with a contact number register.office@dudley.gov.uk
- Call Dudley Council Plus on 0300 555 2345 to book by telephone
- Certificates are issued at the end of the appointment and the green form for the burial/cremation is emailed to the funeral director.
- There is no charge to register a death. Please note: charges are made for a death certificate.
- The registry office does not accept cash. All payments for certificates are by card and preferably before you arrive for the appointment. A link to pay online will be sent to you.
- To ease the process and ensure details are correct, it’s helpful if you can find the persons birth certificate, marriage or civil partnership certificate and details of any change of names. Any correction to details after the registration, will incur a fee.

Funeral cost advice
Help with funeral costs is available in certain situations. This is known as a Funeral Expenses Payment or a Funeral Payment. It is available to those who get certain benefits
Any Funeral Expenses Payment made is then deducted from any money you may receive for the deceased’s estate.
You can check to see if the benefit you are receiving means you may be eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment
- The Children’s Funeral Fund for England gives information to support a child’s funeral.
- Some trade unions offer financial support and/or general guidance that may help you with arranging and paying for a meaningful funeral.
- The Money Advice Service, which offers free support with money management, recognises that paying for a funeral is expensive and outlines options on how to pay for a funeral.
- A number of providers now offer Direct Cremations.
- In situations where the money available in the estate is insufficient to pay for the funeral and if there are no family or friends to arrange the funeral, the local council can make provision for a Public Health Funeral.
