Promoting independence and wellbeing at home

Thank you for attending the promoting independence and wellbeing at home workshop.

Frontline staff and others who have direct contact with older people have thousands of conversations every day.  Through these daily interactions, we have the power to change people’s lives.  Let’s use these opportunities to engage, focus on strengths, provide basic information and signpost for further information. We can use these opportunities with older people to:

  • Support them to make healthy changes by exploring what matters to them,
  • Respond to conversations differently that will encourage them to find their own solutions,
  • Listen more to find out what interests them,
  • Support them to achieve their goals, often their first steps in making a change
  • Signpost them to relevant information and useful resources, and
  • Refer them to local support services when needed

The following are information sheets that accompany the training workshop. They give you the essential information on health and wellbeing, so that you have practical tips and tools for conversations with older people about their health and wellbeing, provide basic advice, help and assist someone to further information and resources and direct people to support when needed.
