Travel vaccinations

To help you stay well and protect your finances when abroad make sure you’re up to date with your UK vaccinations and have all the immunisations needed for the country you’re visiting. Some vaccines may be a Visa requirement.

Preventable diseases, such as meningitis and measles, are more common in some European countries and the rest of the world than here in the UK.

If you have not had all the required immunisations your travel insurance may not cover you for expensive treatment if you or a loved one become ill while travelling .

Visit your health care professional at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures.

Country specific information and advice is available from the National Travel Health Network and Centre on TravelHealthPro.

Useful information and advice about healthcare abroad is also available on this NHS page.

Consider your measles vaccination status before you travel

Measles occurs in many countries around the world with large outbreaks continuing to be reported. You can see the top 10 countries with measles outbreaks on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website. To stay safe and well check you and your loved ones are fully protected against measles with two doses of a measles vaccine, such as the Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, before you travel. You can contact your GP to catch up on routine vaccinations you may have missed including your MMR.
